Northcote Graduate Scholarships
Scholarships are to
enable students resident in the United Kingdom to undertake a higher degree at an Australian university for a period of up to three years. Applicants must ascertain their eligibility for an Australian graduate programme. There are no limitations as to the field of study. The scholarship will provide economy class return air fares to Australia, payment of compulsory fees and charges at an Australian university and an inclusive allowance of A$17,4 per annum (subject to review). Successful candidates must make the outward journey within the first calendar year of the award being granted. Applicants should be under the age of 30. Usually two scholarships are awarded each year.

Bringing Science to Society
In line with the Royal Institution's Bicentenary Year initiative for promoting young scientists in all aspects of their career, the RI is pleased to invite nominations for a prize sponsored by the Royal Society of Chemistry. An award of Pounds 5,000 is offered to full-time, research scientists in the first five years of their career for the best contribution of any type to the public understanding of science. The prize is intended to fund some aspect of the winner's research activities. Nominations may be from chemistry in its widest interpretation, from physical chemistry through to molecular biology, biochemistry and the neurosciences. Nominations or self nominations should include a brief summary, one page of A4, on the applicant's career, a half page statement explaining the reasons for their nomination and the names of two referees. Fellowships
These fellowships are awarded for prolonged visits (4 to 24 months) and are particularly intended for advanced training through research. The fellowships provide the travel costs and a stipend for the fellow and his/her family. If the applicant is already at the receiving institute, travel is not paid. The stipend rates depend on the country being visited, marital status, etc. Applicants must hold a doctorate degree or equivalent before the start of the fellowship but not necessarily when applying. As a minimum, applicants must have at least one first author publication in press or published in an international peer reviewed journal at the time of application. Long-term fellowships are aimed to support those who have recently completed their PhD. Normally this means young scientists with up to approximately four years post-doctoral experience. RESEARCH INTO
AGEING
Research into Ageing raises funds to support research that will improve the quality of life for older people and to train researchers to work in this field. There are three types of award on offer: Research project grants (to support salaries, some equipment and travel, and consumables); Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Fellowships (for postdoctoral workers); Prize PhD Studentships (to encourage able young scientists to train in ageing research). Both medics and scientists are eligible for grants - as are all those who work in the UK (i.e. including foreign nationals with UK work permits). Research overseas is not funded. Applications for research project grants and PhD studentships require the submission of a one A4-page synopsis outlining the proposal. The synopsis should include the following: the title of the project, its research location and its supervisor; a description of its objectives and method; the estimated level of grant required and its likely duration.

BIOTECHNOLOGY AND BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES RESEARCH COUNCIL
Genomics in Animal Function Initiative (GAIN) - an initiative in integrative animal physiology. Only research proposals that aim to understand the physiological or behavioural function of animals by utilising data from the genome sequencing programmes and by applying the technologies of functional genomics are eligible. Proposals to exploit sequence information by homology in non-genetically tractable organisms are encouraged. Research projects involving collaborations between physiologists and behavioural neuroscientists with molecular biologists, biochemists and cell biologists are specifically encouraged. Applications addressing all areas of animal physiology and behaviour are welcomed. This initiative is open to UK universities, other HEIs and academic analogues normally eligible for BBSRC responsive mode funding, and to BBSRC-sponsored institutes. Proposals co-funded with industry are particularly encouraged. Deadline:

Social Science Small Grants Scheme
This scheme makes small grants for social science research expenses. Awards are normally up to Pounds 5,000, although in exceptional circumstances awards of up to Pounds 10,000 may be made. Applicants must be resident and working in the UK.
Trustees have identified three priorities for funding: projects that develop social science research capacity particularly by supporting the work of those new to social science research; self-contained or pilot or preliminary projects that address the wider objects of the foundation, namely a broad concern with the "advancement of social well-being"; outstanding small projects in the social sciences. Postgraduate
Support Fund
A sum of Pounds 5,000 has been allocated to provide support in 1999 for postgraduates in exceptional circumstances, such as periods of ill-health, absence of essential facilities, disruption of supervision etc, to assist in the completion of their research projects and to bridge the period between graduation and the availability of full-time posts for especially gifted students. Those eligible to apply are graduates in physiology or a related science engaged in research in the UK in a department of physiology or related science when their supervisor is a member of the Physiological Society. Applicants will normally be registered for a PhD although MPhil and MSc students may apply. Deadline: July 31, but applications will be considered at other times.
