www.esrc.ac.uk Teaching and Learning Programme - first call for proposals The ESRC is mounting a major programme of research into learning and teaching. The prime objective is to improve outcomes for learners at all ages and across a wide range of educational and training contexts. Applications may be for a Research Network or a Research Fellowship or a Research Network in which one or more Fellowships are embedded. Outline applications are invited in the first instance for awards to start in January 2000.

The Institution of Electrical Engineers
http://www.iee.org.uk/Awards The institution offers three Postgraduate Scholarships or Grants to assist postgraduates with advance study or research in electrical, electronic science or manufacturing engineering at a university in the United Kingdom. The awards are worth a maximum of Pounds 1,200 and are tenable for one year.
Deadline: For consideration in May, applications must be received by April 30.

NACC Research Awards 1999
NACC grants can cover the costs of materials, laboratory services and staff specifically employed in the research. NACC will not pay for organisational overheads such as rent, heating, administrative support etc. Funding for any one project will not normally exceed Pounds 35,000 per year.

NACC 1999 - 2000 Social and Psychological Research Award
Up to Pounds 75,000 for a two-year research project. Applications can relate to any subject concerning the social and psychological aspects of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). However we would particularly welcome proposed research on: bowel incontinence (social or psychological aspects); the effects of IBD on families.

Alliance: The British Council Franco-British joint research programme

Aims to promote the development of Franco-British scientific co-operation between universities and public sector research institutes in France and the UK.
Applications are now invited for the 2000 programme in pure and applied sciences, technology and applied social sciences.
Priorities: Pure or applied sciences: no priority areas are defined. Applied social sciences: all areas will be considered. However, projects in the field of bioethics, biotechnology and information technology will be particularly welcomed.
Preference will be given to those projects showing most promise for the development of new cooperation between the two countries, impact and innovation of research, involvement of young researchers and potential for subsequent funding (e.g. EU or industry). Applications must be made concurrently by the British and French teams that wish to collaborate. www.esf.org/ social.htm Standing Committee for the Social Sciences (SCSS) Exploratory Research Workshops Scheme Call for Proposals 1999 The SCSS of the European Science Foundation has launched a scheme of small awards to support the development of social science research at the European level. The purpose of the workshops scheme is to offer social scientists the facility of "seed money" to both build and strengthen research contacts, to test innovative ideas and to develop potential collaborative research projects. Proposals are invited which demonstrate European added value through the adoption of a comparative research approach, and address basic research issues of medium to long-term importance. While applications in any topic field which meet these general criteria are welcomed, the SCSS would be particularly interested in receiving proposals on the following topics:
A Education, socialisation and the changing family structure
B The changing role of knowledge in society
C The funding of local government and services in Europe
D Open element
Applications must demonstrate the potential importance of European research collaboration in the chosen field.

The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council
Renewable and New Energy Technologies Deadlines for outline proposals: May 14 and October 8.
The programme will commit up to Pounds 3.5 million per annum for new research projects, depending on the quality of proposals received.
In encouraging this field of research, EPSRC has the following objectives:
*to focus on medium-to-long-term key research issues for the renewable and clean energy industries
* to fund research that will take forward and inform Government policy on new and renewable energy
