Infrastructures
Kristineberg Marine Research Station (KMRS) has been selected for support by the EU programme Transnational Access to major Research Infrastructures (TARI). The objective is to provide researchers or research teams with access to facilities in Europe that are important for high quality research and to complement national efforts in respective field. KMRS now offers European researchers access to Kristineberg, either to participate in ongoing projects at the station or by initiating new projects. Appointed researchers are granted access to most facilities at KMRS, including laboratories, experimental facilities, technical equipment and research vessels. Study Grants
Their purpose is to enable cancer investigators from any country to carry out bilateral research projects abroad which exploit complementary materials or skills, including advanced training in experimental methods or special techniques. Candidates should be actively engaged in cancer research with appropriate scientific or medical qualifications and recent publications in international peer-reviewed periodicals. About 15 grants with an average value for three months of US$9,000 are made annually. Grants are awarded for periods of one to three months. Next deadline: July 1. CERIES offers an annual international Research Award for research on healthy skin for a period of 12 months. This award is intended to honour and support a researcher in dermatology in the pursuit of his work on the physiology or biology of healthy skin. The theme of the award is "Physiology or Biology of Healthy Skin and/or its Reactions to Environmental Factors". The project may be fundamental or clinical in nature and applicants must have completed all clinical and research training and have several years' experience in the field of dermatological research. International Research Fund
A new scheme to facilitate visits of up to three months to and from the UK/Republic of Ireland in order to carry out a defined piece of research in any area of microbiology. Applicants must be scientists of postdoctoral level or above. The visits may be of up to three months duration. The awards cover the costs of return travel, a subsistence allowance and a contribution towards the costs of consumables in the host laboratory. Next deadline: July 31. Applications are invited for funding to undertake applied research projects in relation to the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The British Council and IELTS Australia have designated funds to be made available for suitable research projects on IELTS. Financial support will be limited to a maximum of Pounds 13,000. Institutions/individuals are invited to submit a written application (maximum of ten pages, unbound) in accordance with the format and content requirements. Applications are invited from postdoctoral research workers for the first round of fellowships, to be taken up in 2001. This programme is the trust's only general scheme of support for postdoctoral scientists who wish to work outside the UK or Ireland. Purpose: to provide postdoctoral scientists with further research experience in leading laboratories overseas.
The awards are open to scientists who received their doctorate in the UK or Ireland. Candidates must have been engaged in postdoctoral research for not more than five years. Research proposals may be in any branch of the basic or clinical sciences which has a bearing on human or veterinary medicine, with the exception of cancer.
Fellowships are tenable for three years, with two years spent in a host country and a third year in the UK or Ireland. Preliminary applications deadline: July 7. Small Ecological Project Grants
SEPGs are given to promote all aspects of ecological research and ecological survey. The grant has been extended to enable ecologists to travel from the UK or Ireland to a third country, or vice versa, for the purposes of research where alternative sources of funding are inadequate. Grants are given towards the cost of travel, for the employment of casual and short-term assistance, and for the purchase of small items of equipment (which will usually remain the property of the BES). The AHRB has established a partnership
with the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation to provide joint funding for two fellowships in the creative and performing arts.
The scheme allows
higher education institutions to appoint researchers in practice-based arts
for a period of up to three years. The scheme aims to support the development of individual researchers and promote research-based art in
universities and colleges. The Daiwa Foundation aims to strengthen UK interest in the promotion of links with Japan, particularly in a cultural and academic setting. The foundation will co-fund up to two of the AHRB Fellowship awards, which will support practice-based research within or into the Japanese creative and performing arts, provided that candidates of sufficient quality present themselves. Development Research Centres
Economic and social research funded by DFID is managed by the ESCOR Unit, part of economics, statistics and institutions division. DFID funds research in this area in order to generate knowledge which will influence policy and practice in development in line with DFID objectives. Development Research Centres (DRCs) are DFID's new initiative to improve the integration of economic and social research, policy influencing and southern capacity building. The aim of these centres is to generate policy-relevant research which will help the wider development community and DFID to achieve their
objectives, including the International Development Targets by 2015. DRCs are centres of specialisation around a particular research and policy theme. The aim is to provide sufficient and flexible resources
over a long enough time period to enable genuine development of expertise and new thinking. While the characteristics of DRCs are flexibility and continuity over five years, they are nevertheless intended to fund a programme of work with clear objectives, leading
to specified outputs. The activities of the DRCs are driven by a coherent research agenda, focusing on a particular theme. The DFID is particularly keen to encourage the professional development of younger staff and long-term collaborative arrangements with southern or transitional country partners.
