Assessment of Impacts of Genetically Modified Plants
The programme offers travel grants and a small number of fellowships for researchers in the fields of the environmental impact and biosafety of genetically modified crops, to support visits of up to one year to another European country. Applicants must be currently working in a European institute, and should preferably return to the same institute on completion of their visit, so that this institute can also benefit from the grantee's broadened knowledge. Priority will be given to applications involving at least one country contributing to the AIGM Programme budget.
Travel Grants
Duration: up to three months. No deadline for applications: applications will be considered on a rolling basis and should be submitted at least six weeks before the planned start of the visit. Support: travel and accommodation costs on the basis of actual costs and a small per diem (maximum E35), up to a maximum of E1750 per month. Applications:

$125,000 will be awarded to the individual, group or institution whose research holds the greatest promise for reducing global poverty. Medals with cash awards of $10,000 and $5,000 will also be given in each of five topic areas.

Through the European Commission's Improving Human Potential Access to Research Infrastructures Programme, funds have been made available to provide access to European member and associated state researchers to undertake short visits to utilise the facilities of The Natural History Museum and its associates for research purposes. Average visit duration is four weeks although visits of up to three months will be considered. Researcher's travel costs will be met and a per diem provided to meet living costs whilst in London. Brain Cancer Research The JSMF, as part of its new 21st Century Science Initiative, announces the third annual request for proposals in brain cancer research. Proposals submitted to the foundation should describe novel research that will generate new knowledge leading to increased rates of survival and improve functional recovery for individuals with brain cancer. The support is intended to encourage new ideas and approaches, early in their development, that are unlikely to be funded from traditional sources. The program will preferentially support:
1. Investigations exploring novel approaches, based on information from neurobiology, genetics, molecular biology, immunology and neuropathology, to the development of new brain cancer therapies.
2. Studies that apply advances and information from research on non-nervous system cancers to the tumours arising in the unique environment of the brain.
3. Research improving the diagnosis and treatment of brain tumours through better understanding of the cellular and molecular characterisation of brain cancers.
Proposals can request up to $450,000 total in direct costs, only. Proposals from junior academics and from individuals with strong neuroscience, genetics, molecular pathology, and immuntumourology backgrounds, interested in pursuing novel research on brain cancer, are encouraged. Laboratory Refurbishment Scheme
The scheme will fund the renovation and modernisation of research laboratories which are to be used for research in informatics and computational modelling in the fields of biology, chemistry and medical science. A total of Pounds 2.5 million is available for award in 2000. It is envisaged that awards will normally be for a maximum of Pounds 250,000. The refurbishment can include provision of infrastructure equipment. In addition up to 25% of the total award can be devoted to the purchase of relevant scientific equipment. Grants are only available for scientists with substantive posts in universities in the UK working in informatics and computational modelling in the fields of biology, chemistry and medical science. Research and Action Project Grants
This fund finances projects within the UK for education and research and for novel forms of help to those with drinking problems.
The council seeks to: increase awareness of alcohol issues; and facilitate a reduction in alcohol-related harm in society. Its aim is to make a positive difference to the ways in which society understands and uses alcohol. Copies of application forms and the relevant guidelines are available online. Economic and social research funded by DFID is managed by the ESCOR Unit, part of Economics, Statistics and Institutions Division. DFID funds research in this area in order to generate knowledge which will influence policy and practice in development in line with DFID objectives. A wide range of research of practical relevance to transitional and developing countries is financed and carried out by the whole spectrum of social science disciplines. Proposals submitted to the responsive research programme must be able to contribute to DFID's overall objectives. Autosub Under Ice: announcement of opportunity
This new thematic programme will investigate the marine environment of polar continental shelves, focussing in particular on the influence of sea ice & ice shelves. It will provide research opportunities in the following research areas: chemical, physical & biological oceanography; marine geology & sea-ice geophysics; glaciology; ice-ocean interaction; modelling and remote sensing. UK researchers are invited to submit up to two outline proposals as principal investigator to carry out research within this programme. This fellowship is primarily for well established, internationally recognized scientists who want to work at a Norwegian research institute. The fellowship aims to strengthen Norwegian research institutions and to promote contact between foreign scientists and Norwegian researchers. WELLCOME TRUST
Biomedical Research Collaboration Grants To promote new and existing collaborations between research groups in the UK or Ireland and groups in other countries. This scheme aims to encourage cooperating laboratories to pool resources by establishing closer links between workers engaged in related fields of research. It is principally intended for collaborations between two countries and not for a consortium of researchers. Applicants should hold established posts. These awards provide funds to enable members of the collaborating research teams to meet regularly, to work in one another's laboratories for short periods, and to exchange experimental materials. Support is provided for up to three years at an annual cost that will depend on the location of the overseas laboratory but will usually not exceed Pounds 6000. The awards are not intended to cover the costs of the research programmes in the collaborating laboratories. Preliminary applications can be made at any time. EPSRC invites collaborative research proposals in the area of microsystems technology. The activity will focus on the design and manufacture of integrated microsystems, aiming to strengthen the UK's performance in all aspects of precision microsystems engineering. The initiative aims to build a programme of multi-disciplinary research, with emphasis on research driven by end-user or application: particularly in areas where the UK has considerable existing strength and expertise, such as aerospace, biotechnology, chemicals/pharmaceuticals, medical engineering and sensing systems. The Australian Scholarships and Fellowships Trust, University of London, invites applications for bicentennial scholarships or fellowships tenable in Australia in 2000/2001. The object of the scheme is to promote scholarship, intellectual links, and mutual awareness and understanding between the UK and Australia, in particular, a) to enable UK graduates to study in approved courses or undertake approved research in Australia;
b) to enable Australian graduates to study in approved courses or undertake approved research in the UK, and
c) to make allowance within the scheme for disadvantaged persons.
An applicant for a scholarship must be registered as a post-graduate student at a British tertiary institution, or be eligible for such registration at an Australian tertiary institution, and be usually resident in the UK. Applicants should normally have at least an upper second class honours degree. An applicant for a fellowship should have a good post-graduate degree or equivalent experience, and should be seeking to further education their professional experience but not through taking a further degree. Candidates may be in any discipline, but must demonstrate that there are special scholarly or practical advantages to be gained from a period of study in Australia. The emphasis is on clinical research or research at the clinical/basic
