21st Century

Scientists Awards -

Brain Cancer Research The JSMF, as part of its new 21st Century Science Initiative, announces the third annual request for proposals in brain cancer research. Proposals should describe novel research that will generate new knowledge leading to increased rates of survival and improve functional recovery for individuals with brain cancer. The support awarded through this RFP is intended to encourage new ideas and approaches, early in their development, that are unlikely to be funded from traditional sources. The program will preferentially support:

1. Investigations exploring novel approaches, based on information from neurobiology, genetics, molecular biology, immunology and neuropathology, to the development of new brain cancer therapies.

2. Studies that apply advances and information from research on non-nervous system cancers to the tumors arising in the unique environment of the brain.

3. Research improving the diagnosis and treatment of brain tumors through better understanding of the cellular and molecular characterisation of brain cancers.

Proposals can request up to $450,000 total in direct costs, only. The funds can be expended in no less than three years, and not more than six years. Proposals from junior faculty and from individuals with strong neuroscience, genetics, molecular pathology, and tumor immunology backgrounds, interested in pursuing novel research on brain cancer, are encouraged. See the website for full application guidelines. Deadline: June 16. Queries should be emailed to:

Joint Research

Programme

The UK-Dutch Joint Research Programme was established to stimulate scientific and academic research collaboration between the two countries. The programme is managed and financed jointly by the British Council in the Netherlands and the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research. Although the majority of successful project applications under the programme have been, and continue to be, in the sciences, the programme encompasses all fields of academic research, including the humanities and social sciences.

Grants are made available for international travel and subsistence. The duration of visits may vary between one week and two months. Project proposals may be submitted by permanent academic staff of higher education institutions in either country to work jointly in the same field of research, or in a complementary discipline. Proposals for visits to finalise the drawing up of a collaborative project can also be considered. Next deadline: June 30. For further information and application forms, British applicants should contact (preferably in writing): Jo van Ginkel, The British Council, Keizersgracht 269, 1016 ED Amsterdam; tel: +31 20 550 6062; fax: +31 20 620 7389; email: jo.vanginkel@britcoun.nl

ARTS & HUMANITIES RESEARCH BOARD

www.ahrb.ac.uk/research/enhancement/index.htm

Resource Enhancement Scheme

The scheme provides awards of up to Pounds 300,000 to meet the costs related to proposals that are designed to improve the utilisation and accessibility of research resources and materials of all kinds. The maximum length of an award is three years, with maximum expenditure of Pounds 100,000 permitted in anyone year. The aims of the scheme are: 1. To promote access to and availability of high-value research resources in the arts and

humanities.

2. To support the development of high-level finding aids to research resources.

3. To support the development of generic tools for use in the exploitation of research resources in the arts and humanities.

The scheme is not designed to finance the purchase of wholly new resources or simply to supply investment in research tools and resources. It will support work that seeks to improve access to and the availability of an existing resource. Through the resource enhancement scheme the board is seeking to facilitate more efficient and effective use of research resources. The scheme is open to members of the academic staff of HEIs directly funded by the funding councils. Applicants for a resource enhancement grant should be of postdoctoral standing.
