Quality Research in Dementia: Research

Fellowship Grant Scheme 1999/2000

Building on the success of Alzheimer's Disease Society's Research Fellowship programme, QRD continues to offer personal fellowships to talented junior researchers. Awards will be made by competitive, peer-reviewed application with one deadline for applications each year.

QRD invites applications for Research Fellowships in the areas of cause, cure or care for dementia. These awards are intended for the support of medical or non-medical graduates, with some appropriate experience, who are in the middle stages of their training and wish to pursue an academic career in the field of dementia. Awards are usually for a period of two to three years. The primary objective of the research must be to contribute to our understanding of the causes of dementia, the development of cures for dementing disorders, or to the evidence-base for effective care. Awards may only be held in an academic institution or clinical department in the UK. Candidates without a medical qualification will have already completed a PhD degree. Deadline: December 14. Full details on the web, or contact: Alzheimer's Disease Society, Quality Research in Dementia Programme, c/o The Dementia Research Group, The National Hospital for Neurology & Neurosurgery, Queen Square, London WC1N 3BG; Tel: 0207 829 8773; Fax: 0207 209 0182; Email: QRD@dementia.ion.ucl.ac.uk

BIOTECHNOLOGY AND BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES RESEARCH COUNCIL www.bbsrc.ac.uk

The BBSRC supports three fellowship schemes to enable scientists to devote their time to independent research and scholarship: David Phillips

Fellowships - support outstanding young scientists in the initial stages of an independent research career. These can be held at any appropriate UK university or BBSRC-sponsored institute which is prepared to employ the fellow. Applicants are responsible for agreeing suitable arrangements with the institution concerned before submitting an application, and for ensuring there are adequate facilities available for the research proposed. Applicants must be postdoctoral scientists with up to six years active postdoctoral research experience.

Research Development Fellowships - designed to enable UK university academic staff to devote themselves full-time to independent research, and are targeted at those likely to progress to the highest level in their area of science. Applicants must be full-time established members of the academic staff of a UK university who have worked for a minimum of five years in their current or a similar post.

Professorial

Fellowships - for outstanding scientists permanently employed in research and teaching in a university or an equivalent research institution including industry. The scheme is intended to provide them with the opportunity to devote themselves to research during a highly productive period in their careers, free of all significant university teaching and from major administrative, consultancy and commercial commitments. Candidates for BBSRC Professorial Fellowships will already be recognised as outstanding scientists, and will have proved their exceptional research and interpretative ability at an international level.

Application forms for all of the above Fellowships can be obtained from: Secretariat and Liaison Branch; Tel: 01793 413348; Email: postdoc.fellowships@bbsrc.ac.uk Written enquiries should be addressed to the

Invitation for

Proposals

The Foundation invites proposals for new research capable of providing quantified evidence of improved productivity and performance from the practical use of alternative: working methods; interventions; services and arrangements at work

Within this, proposals are expected to address issues such as: motivation; prevention; mitigation of reduced performance; rehabilitation; return to work. Preference will be given to improvements that are sustainable. The research work should aim for a maximum duration (from outset to final report) of 18 months and be designed to provide clear responses to one or more of the issues highlighted on the BOHRF website, under the heading 'Our Current Research Priorities'. Outline proposals, which should be no longer than one side of A4, are invited in the first instance. These should specify a title followed by: 1) hypotheses/aims/ objective/key assumptions; 2) outline method; 3) key variables; 4)validity of tools and other measures applied to key variables. Deadline: February 18, 2000. Contact: Michael Ladenburg, BOHRF c/o Whitbread, 52 Chiswell Street, London EC1Y 4SD. Tel: 0171 615 1080; Fax: 0171 615 1147; Email: admin@

ENGINEERING AND PHYSICAL SCIENCES RESEARCH COUNCIL

Interdisciplinary Research Networks In Systems Theory

This initiative aims to fund a number of networks of researchers from different disciplines to develop ideas for research into systems theory. The call is supported by the Council's programmes for IT and Computer Science, Engineering and Mathematics but the networks may also include research workers from any other discipline, especially biology and sociology. The objectives of each network would be to explore a multi-disciplinary approach to some aspect of systems thinking and to contribute to a synthesis, which identifies the problems, priorities and prospects for systems theory and practice. The approach could be problem-orientated, even to the extent of including a problem-owner. Proposals must be submitted on the form EPS(RP) together with a case for support. Guidance notes are available on the website. Deadline: December 17. Contact: Dr Anna Fitzsimmons, IT&CS Programme, EPSRC, Polaris House, North Star Avenue, Swindon SN2 1ET; Tel: 01793 444234; Email: anna.fitzsimmons@epsrc.ac.uk

ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL RESEARCH COUNCIL

www.esrc.ac.uk

Understanding the Evolving Macroeconomy Research Programme: Phase 2 The aim of the Programme is to study the behaviour, governance and management of the UK economy in a rapidly changing world economic environment and is organised around two related themes: Economic Growth and Fluctuations; Economic Policy: Design, Governance and Practice.

Although, in the past, these issues have been largely the preserve of economists often using traditional techniques such as macroeconometric models, it is increasingly recognised that a better understanding of them requires new tools and broader perspective involving other disciplines. While standard macro- economic analysis remains important, this Programme encourages the use of new methods of analysis and provides scope for more cross-disciplinary work. Follow the instructions on the on-line outline proposal form. Deadline:

January 10, 2000.
