Study Visits to Italy under the European Science Exchange Programme
Study visit grants are for short-term visits to enhance the research capabilities of individual scientists, develop international collaborative links, enable participation in international programmes and preserve high-quality science. Study visits within Europe should normally be between seven days and three months, although visits of up to six months may be considered. Awards cover research in the natural and applied sciences, including mathematics, engineering, medicine and the scientific research aspects of psychology, archaeology, agriculture, and the history of science. Study visit grants are intended for UK scientists of at least postdoctoral status and of proven research ability. Study visits are assessed on a monthly basis but applications must be made at least three months before the visit. Application materials are available on the website. Hugh Last and Donald Atkinson Funds Committee
Applications are considered for financial assistance towards the undertaking, completion or publication of work that relates to any of the general scholarly purposes of the Roman Society, i.e. to promote the study of the history, archaeology, literature and art of Italy and the Roman Empire, from the earliest times down to about AD 700. Grants usually range from Pounds 400 to Pounds 1,000. In addition, postgraduate students may apply for small grants for visits to conferences and other research expenses.
Application forms are available from the secretary of the society, but applications in the form of letters are also welcome. Invitation to apply for funding for a research programme
(1) Risk, The Public Understanding of Science, and Public Policy
(2) Language and Global Communication
The Leverhulme Trustees are prepared to consider awarding a substantial programme grant or grants in one or both of the fields indicated above. A grant would be intended to support a major research undertaking and a programme should typically be designed to last for five years at a total cost of no more than Pounds 1.2 million.
The Topics
1. Risk, the public understanding of science, and public policy: issues involved in the public perception of the risks associated with scientific and technological change and in the shaping of related public policies.
2. Language and global communication: linguistic aspects of the systems of communication which characterise global developments in various spheres. Applications should be made only by groups of senior researchers, or by existing research centres or teams with an established record of publication and scholarly achievement in relevant fields.

Project Grants
Applications must be submitted on the appropriate project grant form obtainable from the fund. The purposes of the project grant support are to provide funds for the employment of suitably qualified staff, the purchase of essential equipment and the provision of recurrent expenses. Project grants are usually awarded for up to three years. The applicant should preferably occupy a tenured post.
Programme Grants
The purpose is to provide support for research that requires longer-term access to funding than is usual for project grants. Applications must be discussed before submission with the scientific director of the fund.
