An encryption algorithm developed by three academics is among five finalists in the US competition to select an encryption standard for the 21st century. Serpent, a 128-bit block cipher, was developed by Ross Anderson of Cambridge University, Eli Biham of the Technion, Israel, and Lars Knudsen of the University of Bergen, Norway.
