A silver lining has appeared amid the financial gloom of the further education sector. In Deptford. Lewisham College's new Pounds 12 million Deptford Bridge campus, recently opened by Labour leader Tony Blair, boasts three new buildings for construction, engineering, fashion, arts and education.

So proud are the students that they have pushed the principal, Ruth Silver, into naming one of the buildings after herself. Rumours that a new Docklands Light Railway station on the campus will be named Ruth Silver Parkway have been scotched, however. It may be called Lewisham College Reach instead.
