While the Labour Party attracted Bono, the megastar lead singer of rock group U2, it looked as if the Tories were going to have to rely on the decidedly less glamourous Rick Wakeman, former keyboardist of 1970s prog-rock outfit Yes. But help was at hand from Zac Goldsmith, son of the late billionaire financier Sir James and brother of Jemima. Mr Goldsmith, anticapitalist and editor of The Ecologist magazine, arrived to host a fringe meeting - "Making politics sexy".
