The Times Higher launched its third annual awards for higher education this week.

More than 90 universities and several dozen colleges entered last year, making the event by far the biggest overarching awards scheme in the sector.

Times Higher acting editor Gerard Kelly said: "Our chief aim when we set up the awards was to celebrate and mark the enormous yet often unsung contribution higher education makes to the country. You only have to look at the fantastic response we received last year and the diversity of entries to see that we have achieved that goal.

"From support for local bus services to sending satellites into space, from opening campuses in the Far East to rescuing local football clubs - there are few economic, cultural, geographical and social areas from which universities are excluded."

The award categories are designed to reflect the pioneering work that universities do in research and innovation, student and community support, and staff development and environmental sustainability. New categories have been added to highlight work in the arts, ICT and marketing. The Arts Council is sponsoring an Excellence and Innovation in the Arts award to recognise the collaborative and interdisciplinary work going on in universities to promote the arts. The Joint Information Systems Committee aims to encourage best practice with an Outstanding ICT Initiative of the Year prize and there will also be a Marketing Initiative of the Year award to recognise the role of university marketing and communication departments.

For the Best Student Experience award, OpinionPanel Research will canvass 20,000 students on their entire university experience - teaching, social life, facilities, graduate expectations - the largest such survey in the UK.

The closing date for entries is June 29. The shortlist will be announced in September and the awards dinner will take place on November 29 at Grosvenor House, Park Lane, London. To reserve a place contact Kelly Booker on 0207 782 3034.
