Scots to turn carnivore fish into vegetarians

Aberdeen University scientists hope to turn fish vegetarian in a bid to boost fish farming.

At present, farmed fish are fed fishmeal made from wild fish, but the supply is becoming increasingly precarious as the demand for fishmeal increases and stocks of wild fish decline.

Dominic Houlihan, dean of Aberdeen's faculty of science and engineering, said: "Our project will investigate the possibilities of using cereals or other products to feed fish such as trout or sea bass." The research is funded by the European Commission.
