Students have welcomed moves by the Scottish Executive to introduce a licensing scheme registering private sector landlords.
Landlords face being struck off and unable to rent their property if they endanger or exploit their tenants.
Richard Baker, president of the National Union of Students Scotland, said:
"Students are one of the main groups affected by poor housing in the private sector. Each week we deal with complaints over landlords withholding deposits, neglecting safety and evicting students illegally. We are delighted that the Scottish executive has taken up many of our concerns."
