The excitement over the impending return of the Stone of Destiny to Scotland has been slightly tempered by learned articles explaining that the Scots actually nicked it from Ireland.

When Irish president Mary Robinson turned up to give the bicentenary lecture at Strathclyde University last week, some guilt-ridden members of the audience felt she should be given the stone to take home with her.
