Brussels, 01 March 2002

A new scientific information service (SIS) on advanced alternative methods in biomedical sciences has been made available on the Internet by the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC).

Access to selected databases has been made available from the website (details below) on advanced alternative methods in biomedical sciences. The JRC claims that the new service aims to promote knowledge dissemination and it also wants to promote discussion through the use of an online questionnaire.

The major subjects that are covered include neurotoxicity of chemicals and formulations, non-animal testing for hepatoxicity, percutaneous absorption and metabolism-mediated toxicity.

The establishment of this type of service was outlined in the requirements of 1991 communication of the Commission to the Parliament and Council, SEC-91-1794.
