Funding chiefs are doing their bit to promote equal opportunities in the labs of British universities. Women and ethnic groups are under-represented in departments rated highly in the research assessment exercise, and funding chiefs want to explore the reasons.

Their first step? The cover of the fundamental review of research, published last week, shows a typical laboratory scene: a white woman and a black man peering down microscopes.
