The Guardian had to back down after saying in a front page article that Lord Sainsbury was the owner - in his blind trust - of a firm that patented the cauliflower mosaic promoter. Lord Sainsbury said the allegations were untrue, and that it was owned by the US biotechnology giant Monsanto.
But despite a backdown, allegations of conflict refused to subside.
