SINCE The Times Higher Education Supplement Exchange Fellowship was launched in the early 1970s, 24 Commonwealth academics have been supported to pursue their research in another Commonwealth country.
Beginning with a Ghanaian who spent a month in India in 1974 visiting small-scale industries and mechanised farms, academics from 15 Commonwealth countries have benefited from the scheme, which is administered by the Commonwealth awards division of the Association of Commonwealth Universities.
The 25th, Uma Devi, is reader in law at Sri Padmavati Mahila Visvavidyalam in Tirupati, India. She will visit the National University of Singapore and the University of Malaysia during 1997/98 to study legal protection for women in developing countries in the Commonwealth. Many of the fellowship-holders have had studied development-related issues in education, agriculture and forestry, health and medicine.
Favoured destinations have been India (six), Kenya and Malaysia (four each), and Trinidad, with at least 11 other countries or regions featured.
