Mining giant Rio Tinto has agreed to fund one of the world's largest civilian robotics centres. The Centre for Mine Automation at the University of Sydney, which will have £2 million funding a year, will investigate remotely operated mining processes. The centre will have about 28 full-time staff and ten research students and will run for five to ten years. Representatives from the university and Rio Tinto will monitor performance and guide the centre's direction.
