How would one describe the occupation of the man who would be king, particularly when that man is your father? That was the dilemma faced by Prince William as he completed his Ucas application form for a place to read art history at university. His solution? Landowner.

Rumour has it that the prince may be bound for St Andrews University rather than Edinburgh, which could cost him a king's ransom if he chooses to stay during the British Open Golf Championship. Rooms in New Hall - Pounds 89 a week during term time - are being rented to visitors for Pounds 1,015. But at least students can bask in the knowledge that their digs are three-star and accredited by the Scottish Tourist Board.
