On 26 November 2004 Friends of the Earth (FoE), an environmental organisation, wrote to the Chair of the Management Board of EFSA indicating that it would like the Board to consider the report "Throwing caution to the wind – a review of the European Food Safety Authority and its work on genetically modified foods and crops". This report, which is particularly critical regarding risk assessments carried out by the EFSA Scientific Panel on Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO), was circulated to the Members of the Board. Following its discussion at the Board meeting of 16 December 2004, members agreed that the Chair would write a letter to FoE detailing the Authority's response to the criticisms made on policies and procedures of the GMO Panel. At its meeting of 18 January 2005, the EFSA Management Board endorsed the reply and the Chair advised that it would be forwarded to FoE and published on the EFSA website.
