The 160th meeting of the COST Committee of Senior Officials (CSO), chaired by its President, Prof. Francesco FEDI, was preceded by a COST Day on 30 November 2004.
The aim of this event was to present COST achievements and future plans and to discuss the role of COST in the development of the European Research Area (ERA)1.
Reinforced synergy with EUREKA
Mr R.Kramer, Chairman of EUREKA High Level Group, had been invited to address the meeting and to present the ongoing activities of EUREKA, with a view to further elaborate synergies between the two mechanisms.
It was recalled that the Council (Competitiveness) of the EU in its conclusions of 24 September 2004 had stressed the importance of reinforcing the ties between the Framework Programme and European intergovernmental organisations, such as EUREKA and COST.
Position of COST in ERA
The Committee finalised the statement "Position of COST in the future EU policy for research support". Referring to the six major objectives identified in the Commission communication published in June 2004 ("Science and Technology, the key to Europe's future ­ Guidelines for future EU policy to support research" COM(2004)353), the COST statement highlights the objectives where COST could make a substantial contribution.
