Report available on barriers to biological soil treatment

Brussels, 22 Jan 2003

A report on the barriers to the introduction of biological soil treatment in the EU, prepared as part of a project under the 'energy, environment and sustainable development' sub-section of the Fifth Framework Programme, is now available.

Biological soil remediation is an environmentally sustainable solution for the remediation of contaminated soils. However, it has not been introduced in many Member States as the disposal of contaminated soil at landfill sites is permitted and sometimes encouraged.

As highlighted in the report, the landfill of contaminated soil is the greatest barrier to the implementation of biological soil treatment. The report recommends that major changes to regulation as well as more stringent monitoring of implementation is introduced if soil treatment is to remain a priority in the EU.
