Staff at the University of the West of England had better watch out: their boss is keeping tabs on them on behalf of Brenda.

A note from the press office states: "Her Majesty's Lord Lieutenant of Gloucestershire, Mr Henry Elwes, has invited Alfred Morris, Vice-Chancellor of the West of England, to serve as a Deputy Lieutenant. Mr Morris has replied to Mr Elwes saying that he is delighted to accept the invitation and regards it as a considerable honour.

"The role of Deputy Lieutenant is honorific and involves deputising occasionally for the Lord Lieutenant and assisting him in his role as the 'eyes and ears' of the Queen throughout the area of the lieutenancy. Appointments are made following consultation with Buckingham Palace."
