An unfortunate incident occurred at last week's conference on the employability of non-traditional students.

Colin Biggs, head of education consulting at PricewaterhouseCoopers, was obviously proud of the advertising campaign for foundation degrees that has appeared on the London Underground.

He asked his University of East London audience: "How many of you have seen the tube posters for the foundation degree?" Sadly, the only hands raised were those of the other speakers. Dr Biggs responded: "Well, as I said, there's low street awareness and a lot more needs to be done to raise awareness."
