Queen Mary resists redundancy committee

The college council of Queen Mary, University of London, has resisted pressure to establish a redundancy committee.

The principal had asked the council to set up the committee after receiving a disappointing research grant from the Higher Education Funding Council for England. However, the Association of University Teachers wrote to members of the council, arguing that creating such a committee would be premature as the college management had not yet identified the precise areas where savings could be made. The council has deferred the decision to its next meeting.
