The Altran Foundation is inviting nominations for its 2004 award, which has the theme 'discovering, understanding and enjoying science through innovation'.

The award will go to an example of innovation that makes science appealing and accessible to the widest audience. The flexibility of this year's theme means that it could apply to any number of areas, including the promotion of science and scientific culture, educational processes and science teaching - anything from the initial discovery of science at school to more advanced laboratory research projects.

Applications for the award may be made by individuals or groups from associations, universities, schools, research centres, laboratories, educational and training entities, the media, and private companies in the 14 European countries in which Altran has a presence, as well as the US.

The winner will receive technical advice from Altran for one year. The advice will draw upon Altran's knowledge of research and scientific innovation, technological development, project management, cost optimisation, partner searches, marketing, communication, design and industrialisation.

The award has the support of the French and Italian research ministries, and negotiations are currently underway on a partnership with the European Commission.
