A seminar on the situation of women in the world of science will take place in Madrid, Spain, on 5 June.

'Promoting women in the scientific arena', organised by the Spanish Presidency of the EU, the European Commission and the Residencia de Estudiantes, aims to draw attention to the need to promote a policy for gender equality in science. This is one of the priorities of the 'Science and society' action plan as well as the forthcoming Sixth Framework programme for research.

The seminar will present European Union initiatives, promote debate on the role of women in Spanish research and development (R&D) and set the basis for future initiatives.

It will include presentations by Rainer Gerold, Director of the 'Science and society' directorate of the European Commission's Research DG, and Nicole Dewandre, head of the 'Women and science' unit in the same directorate.
