Postgrad teachers need better support

Postgraduate students who teach undergraduates need more support and training, according to a report published this week by the United Kingdom Council for Graduate Education. The UKCGE found patchy training provision and recommended that all postgraduate st udents with teaching responsibilities receive training for teaching integrated with their research.

Many universities specify that a full-time postgraduate student should undertake no more than six hours teaching a week but there is confusion about whether this limit includes preparation and marking, the report found .
