The University of Gloucestershire's Oxstalls Campus is built on the site of a former domestic science college just five minutes' drive from Gloucester. Set in mature parkland, it looks out over the canalised Wotton Brook.
The original buildings were completely replaced by the architectural practice Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios in 2002.
Although there is residential housing for 200 students in a string of four-storey "villas", the hub of the campus is the Faculty of Sport, Health and Social Care, which comprises a learning centre and a sports science building, linked by a glazed bridge that crosses a water feature at the centre of the site.
The learning centre is built within a top-lit atrium. The sports science building has a "waveform" roof that admits natural light from the north, while the south-facing slopes are clad with photovoltaic cells that supply about 65 per cent of the energy consumed by the building.
The high priority given to environmental issues in the design and execution gained the project a Civic Trust Sustainability Award in 2003.
