The first open symposium on a European strategy for particle physics will take place in Orsay, France, from 30 January to 1 February 2006.
The symposium is organised by the CERN Strategy Group, set up by the CERN Council to prepare a draft strategy document addressing the main lines of particle physics in Europe.
This event will gather researchers from all European countries to discuss the future programme for particle physics in Europe, and its relationship to the global particle physics agenda. Special emphasis is given to the participation of younger scientists, whose future research will be most affected by the strategy. The symposium will give an overview of the field followed by a series of structured discussions covering the competitiveness of theoretical research, research and development in accelerator and detector technology, research at the high energy and high precision frontiers, as well as the interface between fundamental physics and astroparticle and nuclear physics.
The discussions will provide an important input to the draft strategy document to be presented, aiming for unanimous approval, to European governments in the CERN Council meeting taking place in Lisbon next July.
