Tim Unwin , professor of geography at Royal Holloway, University of London, has been appointed programme director of the World Economic Forum's Partnerships for Education initiative.

Brighton University has appointed Gilly Nicol , director of the Eastbourne and District Chamber of Commerce, business development manager for the culinary arts studio. The university also appointed the following people to professorships: Yvonne Hillier , professor of education; Graham Beaver , strategic management; Andrew Cundy , applied geochemistry; Gina Wisker , higher education and contemporary literature; Paul Stenner , psychosocial studies; Flis Henwood , social informatics; David Stephens , international education; Angie Hart , child, family and community health; Avril Loveless , education; Vyv Evans , cognitive linguistics; Tara Brabazon , media studies; Marian Barnes , social policy; and Jo Doust , exercise physiology.

The Association of University Administrators has elected Tessa Harrison , academic registrar at the University of the West of England, to the executive committee.

Cambridge University has appointed Frank Kelly , professor of mathematics of systems, master of Christ's College, succeeding Malcolm Bowie. Christopher Dobson , John Humphrey Plummer professor in chemical and structural biology, has been pre-elected master of St John's College. Jeremy Baumberg , director of nanoscience in Southampton University's School of Physics and Astronomy, has been elected to a professorship in experimental physics.
