The University of Liverpool has appointed: Richard Gillespie, professor of Iberian and Latin American studies at the University of Portsmouth, to the chair of politics; Martin Leuwer, professor of anaesthesia and intensive care medicine at the Medizinishe Hochschule, Hanover, to the chair of anaesthesia; and Andrew Mayes, professor of cognitive neuroscience, department of clinical neurology, Sheffield University, to the chair of cognitive neuroscience. The university has conferred the title of professor on the following readers: Peter Giblin, department of mathematical sciences; John Gowlett, school of classics, archaeology and oriental studies; David Seed, department of English language and literature; Clive Edwards, school of biological sciences; Constant van den Berg, department of earth sciences; Stephen Ward, department of pharmacology and therapeutics; Jean Warburton, department of law. Christopher Mee, senior lecturer in the school of classics, archaeology and oriental studies, has been awarded the title of professor.
The University of Abertay, Dundee, has appointed Caroline Lamb, former director of finance, director of operations.
Philip Martin, professor and dean of arts and humanities at Cheltenham and Gloucester College of Higher Education, has been appointed director of the national subject centre for English at Royal Holloway, University of London, from October 1.
The British Museum has made the following appointments: Margaret O'Brien, former director of visual and media arts at South East Arts will be head of lifelong learning; Fiona Candlin, former lecturer in architecture and art history at Liverpool University, will be lecturer in lifelong learning and museum studies, based at Birkbeck College, London; Rebekah Moran, education officer at the Royal Naval Museum in Portsmouth, will be SmithKline Beecham families education lecturer. Stuart Frost, of the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, and Katharine Wiltshire, education adviser for the London Fire Brigade, will be museum teachers.
David Hargreaves, professor of education at Cambridge University and a former chief inspector of the Inner London Education Authority, takes over as chief executive of the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority on September 1. He is joint vice-chair of David Blunkett's Standards Task Force.
