As St Andrews University awaits the arrival of new student Prince William, closely followed by a tabloid stake-out of any potential girlfriend, it must yearn for the constraints of the past.

Patrick O'Farrell, assistant principal of Heriot-Watt University, revealed a 16th-century St Andrews regulation forbidding "any female to enter the college except the common laundress, who shall not be less than 50 years old".
