NUS argues Cubie applies countrywide

Students from the whole of the United Kingdom should benefit from the work of the Cubie report, the National Union of Students will tell the select committee on higher education next week.

It argues against the idea of "Scottish solutions for Scottish problems".

"Cubie has done some excellent work on what it costs to be a student," said an NUS spokesman. "Please let us not have yet another committee to look into it for the rest of the UK."

The union warns it will demand such a committee if Cubie's relevance for students south of the border continues to be disputed.

The NUS will also call for a full investigation into the Student Loans Company, following allegations of late loan payments and administrative problems. It will also demand an end to speculation about top-up fees.

The NUS submission points to the union's recent survey on students and part-time working, which showed that nearly 60 per cent of students believed part-time jobs were affecting their studies.

The Association of University Teachers also took this up in its submission, saying lecturers were concerned students were neglecting their academic work because of pressure to earn money.
