Norman battalions invade cyberspace

九月 22, 2000

Students of military history will no doubt know that next Thursday is the anniversary of the opening salvoes in the Norman Conquest.

On September 28 1066, William of Normandy and his battalions landed on the Sussex coast and changed the course of British history.

To mark the event the publisher Osprey has gathered a rich set of multimedia resources for lecturers and students on a new website, to be launched on the anniversary of the invasion.

Users who visit the Essential Norman conquest site from next Thursday can follow the daily battle news and gossip in real time, with detailed QuickTime media resources adding detail and depth.

The progress of William's campaign is reconstructed by interactive animated maps, detailed timelines and 360-degree panoramas of the battle, with interactive Norman and Saxon soldiers and 11th-century "soundbites".

Comprehensive encyclopedic entries have been unearthed by expert authors to provide the historical background to the conquest. Students will find comprehensive reading lists to supplement information on the site.

The real-time, day-by-day presentation of the days between William's landing at Pevensey and his victory at Hastings forms the first of Osprey's web reconstructions of key historical moments, focusing on specific events or warrior groups.
