No time for pleasantries

The staff at the Institute for Learning and Teaching are a friendly lot - if a bit misguided. The institute's publications officer recently contacted more than 550 people on its mailing list, inviting them to tell everyone all about themselves.

Paul Wicks included his potted life story: he has a degree in zoology and spent three years as an infant teacher. The initiative ended after protests from overworked academics who could not face the prospect of receiving hundreds of autobiographies.
