Durham University is to open its first new college in the city for more than 30 years. The 16th of Durham's colleges will be named after Josephine Butler, the Northumberland-born writer and social reformer who pioneered women's education. The first students will be admitted to the 400-room college, off South Road in the city, in 2006.
Adrian Simpson, a senior lecturer at Warwick University, has been appointed principal of the college and will take up his post in January.
