Brussels, 06 August 2002

The French Academy of science has created a Scientific information and communication department to help bridge the gap between science and society.

The department was created out of a need to bring together the Academy's scientific information activities and its communication activities. In the process it will contribute to one of the Academy's overall objectives: the campaign against disinformation.

The department's principal mission will be to fill, as far as possible, the gulf which exists between scientific discoveries (and their potential applications) and society's perceptions thereof.

Dominique Meyer, a renowned haematologist from the University of Paris and current president of the Inserm (National institute for health and medical research) Administrative Council will be responsible for setting up the new department.
