A new wave of philanthropy - led by young professionals including many women - has hit the US in the past two to three years.
Jaleh Daie, professor of biology at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, said there has been a huge explosion in private giving by young professionals.
Professor Daie told the AAAS meeting last week that this offers huge opportunities for scientists in the US and abroad, who should approach these donors. "Most of the money is very new, and often made in high-tech companies. Because a lot of these people are technology literate, they are very keen to give back to science and education."
Professor Daie said education, the environment and women's health research have all benefited. She said scientists may need new approaches to these benefactors. "These are not old philanthropists, but people with business backgrounds. They are very strategic and often want a hands-on role."
