Nearly one in ten Salford staff jobs may go

The University of Salford has announced that up to 218 jobs are at risk in a move that affects around one in 10 staff at the institution.

Salford’s move is expected to affect administrative posts in the main.

The university says the eventual number of job losses is likely to be “significantly lower” than 218, but it has not ruled out compulsory redundancies. The announcement puts around 9 per cent of the institution’s 2,500 jobs at risk.

The cuts come at a time when Salford is undertaking significant spending on its campus at the MediaCityUK development.

A Salford spokesman said: “As part of our strategy to enhance and improve our teaching and student experience, we are embarking on a programme to deliver more effective administrative and professional services.

“This will affect around 200 employees, but a significant number of new roles are being created which will be filled by affected staff. The number of job losses is expected to be significantly lower than the affected figure.

“We remain fully committed to working with the unions and staff to avoid compulsory redundancy where possible,” the Salford spokesman said.
