The University of Abertay, Dundee, is joining forces with information technology giant NCR to encourage more software engineers to study and work in Scotland.

To mark the launch of the partnership, 20 final-year software engineering students from Abertay were introduced to NCR's leading-edge automated teller machine technology.

NCR will offer Abertay's software engineering students placements with ATM software software developers at its global research and development centre in Dundee. The students visited the advanced research lab to see how NCR is using technology such as Wap, XML and Bluetooth to allow people to use their mobile phone to order cash from an ATM.

About 40 students from the University of Abertay, Dundee will work on joint projects at NCR over the next three years.

Mark Grossi, NCR chief technology officer, said: "We are committed to hiring and growing the best engineering talent, which is why we are investing about £20 million in a state-of-the-art research and development centre that will house about 500 developers.

"Giving students access to these facilities enables Abertay to expand some of its groundbreaking courses," Mr Grossi added.

Ian Marshall, head of Abertay's School of Computing, said the deal was part of a scheme to build links with industry and to instil a commercial ethos alongside technical skills.

Abertay recently launched an International Centre for Computer Games and Virtual Entertainment, which offers research and consultancy services to digital industries.

Other university projects include Wap technology and industry forecasting.
