The Natural Environment Research Council has established a thematic programme on Lowland Permeable Catchment Research (LOCAR). The overall aim of the thematic programme is to improve the science required to support current and future management needs for permeable lowland catchments through an integrated and multi-disciplinary experimental and modelling programme. LOCAR is undertaking detailed, inter-disciplinary programmes of integrated hydro-environmental research relating to the input-storage-discharge cycle, material fluxes and in-stream, riparian and wetland habitats within groundwater-dominated systems.

Proposals are invited for both research grants and studentships in all areas of aquatic ecology covered by the LOCAR Science. However, priority may be given to proposals addressing in-stream, riparian, hyporheic and wetland habitats and their dependence on flow regimes and biological processes within the valley floor corridor. A total of approximately £0.5 million is available for allocation for research grants and/or studentships at this stage.
