Getting mistaken for the other place is an occupational hazard of cities with more than one higher education institute, but Southampton University is still wild with the Express on Sunday for a recent identity confusion. On June 22 the paper ran an opinion piece slagging off Southampton University for running a "crazy course" in maritime leisure management - an example of the "tragic waste of our finest minds".

The same issue featured a news story titled "University? It's just one long holiday", castigating a Southampton Institute course on which students could, it claimed, "investigate the mysteries of windsurfing and sailing".

A grovelling apology ensued, but other papers picked up the story and repeated the mistake. "They are always mixing us up, it is really infuriating," says one Southampton insider. Er, I that's Southampton University...
