The European Patent Office has closed a loophole that meant it was theoretically possible to clone human beings in Europe after complaints about a patent granted to the University of Edinburgh and Australian biotech firm Stem Cell Sciences. The patent, covering the changing of mammal cells to create a transgenic animal, did not specifically rule out the use of human material. The patent holders said they had not intended to clone humans.
