Researchers are developing storage technology that may lead to miniature devices with 100 times the density of present hard drives. The Millipede system uses an array of minute sensor arms to read the pattern of indentations in a tiny square of plastic. The system, developed at the IBM Zurich Research Laboratory, already has ten times the density of drives in development, and is 100 times denser than those marketed now.
