Alumnus to be proud of no 47 is Brian Mawhinney, the mild-mannered and conciliatory Conservative Party chairman, whose efforts to raise the tone of political debate have been so appreciated in recent months. Dr Mawhinney's academic connections are such that the universities he has attended will soon on present trends outnumber the local authorities controlled by his party. The doctorate comes from the University of London, where he lectured at the Royal Free Medical School for 14 years. His earlier degrees were acquired at Queen's Belfast and Michigan, and he was also an assistant professor in radiation biology at the University of Iowa.
