Stephen Schwartz, former vice-chancellor of Murdoch University in Australia, arrives in London this week to take up his new job as head of Brunel University. Pilloried last year for taking a 65 per cent pay rise over four years while offering his staff just 12 per cent, Professor Schwartz's earnings of A$350,000 (£126,000) nevertheless fell far short of his Brunel predecessor's - Mike Sterling earned £154,000. Meanwhile, Stephen Hill, deputy director of the London School of Economics, has been appointed principal of Royal Holloway, University of London. He will succeed Drummond Bone in September.
