Lobby highlights working-class hurdles

The Government must set national targets for widening participation in higher education, according to the Council for Industry and Higher Education. The CIHE published research this week which shows that only 8 per cent from the lowest social groups progress to higher education, compared with 40 per cent from the highest groups. The report, Class and Higher Education, argues that even if working-class teenagers achieved better results at school, they still would not get to university, as they face so many entrenched cultural barriers.
