A football-shaped molecule has been used to create a new material for research into how superconductors could be used to transmit electricity and cut global energy consumption. Scientists at the universities of Liverpool and Durham have used carbon 60, known as Buckminsterfullerene due to its resemblance to architect Richard Buckminster Fuller's geodesic designs, to demonstrate how superconductors could operate in conditions and temperatures suitable for urban commercial use.
